Seasonal Events and Festivals in Hobart

Enjoy the best our island state has to offer with these seasonal events and festivals

A guide to Hobart’s biggest and most exciting annual events, perfect for visitors planning when to travel, what to see, and what to experience in Tasmania’s capital.

Taste of Summer

Tasmania’s premier summer festival brings food, drink, music and community to Hobart’s waterfront each year from late December through early January. Held on Princes Wharf (PW1) and Salamanca Lawns, this event celebrates the island’s food and wine culture with more than 70 local vendors, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, and a stunning New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

Dark Mofo (Winter Festival)

Dark Mofo is Hobart’s iconic mid‑winter arts and culture festival presented by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Each June the city transforms with immersive art installations, live music, performances, public rituals and the Winter Feast—a large celebration of food and drink featuring local producers. The festival culminates with the annual Nude Solstice Swim at dawn on the shortest day of the year.

Australian Wooden Boat Festival

Celebrating maritime heritage and craftsmanship, the Australian Wooden Boat Festival brings a stunning fleet of traditional wooden vessels, tall ships, races, workshops and on‑water demonstrations to Hobart’s historic waterfront. Held every two years, this festival draws visitors from around the world to explore maritime culture, sailing traditions and family‑friendly activities.

Royal Hobart Regatta

One of Tasmania’s oldest events, the Royal Hobart Regatta is a three‑day celebration of aquatic sport and community held on the Derwent River each February. The regatta features competitive rowing, sailing and swimming races, fireworks, carnival rides and family entertainment. It’s a lively summer tradition and a public holiday in southern Tasmania.

Salamanca Market

While not strictly a festival, Salamanca Market is Hobart’s most visited local event, running every Saturday along historic Salamanca Place. With over 350 stalls offering fresh produce, artisan crafts, local foods, live music and performances, it’s a vibrant cultural experience year‑round and a must‑visit for any traveller.

Cygnet Folk Festival

Held in the Huon Valley town of Cygnet each January, the Cygnet Folk Festival is one of Tasmania’s longest‑running music events. Over three days the festival showcases folk and acoustic music, workshops, dance and community gatherings, drawing artists and audiences from around Australia.

Planning Tips for Visitors

Timing your trip: Many of Hobart’s most popular festivals coincide with summer (December–February) or winter (June), so booking flights and accommodation early can help you secure the best options.

Free and low‑cost experiences: Some events like the Australian Wooden Boat Festival and Salamanca Market are largely free to attend, while ticketed events like Taste of Summer and Dark Mofo have additional paid experiences and special performances.

Explore beyond Hobart: Although these events centre on Hobart, many festivals connect to regional celebrations across Tasmania—you’ll find folk festivals, cider events, arts trails and harvest celebrations throughout the island year‑round.
