The Salmon Ponds, circa 1861, is the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere. It was the birthplace of trout in Australia and the origin of Tasmania's legendary trout fishery.
The Tyenna River is a large fast water stream providing excellent fishing for all methods of angling.
The Salmon Ponds, circa 1861, is the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere. It was the birthplace of trout in Australia and the origin of Tasmania's legendary trout fishery.
The Brown Trout was introduced to Tasmania from Europe in 1864 and is now in good numbers in most lakes and rivers, all of which have self-sustaining populations.

Your Day at a Glance

8:30 am – Depart Hobart
Enjoy a scenic 1.25 hr drive through the rolling hills of the Derwent Valley to Mt Field National Park.


9:45 am – Mt Field National Park
Choose your adventure:
Option 1 – Fishing
🎣 2 hr 30 min self-guided trout fishing along the Tyenna River.
All rods & lures provided.
Option 2 – Scenic Walk 3 Falls
🚶‍♂️ 2 hr 30 min walk taking in Lady Barron Falls, Tall Trees, Little Annie Falls & Russell Falls.
Option 3 – Mixed Experience
• Short Walk 2 Falls (45 min) from Tall Trees to Russell and Horseshoe Falls + 1 hr 45 min fishing
• Easiest Walk 1 Falls (30 min) to the base of Russell Falls + 2 hrs fishing


12:45 pm – Westerway Lunch
Relax with lunch at the quirky Possum Shed Café on the Tyenna River.
Optional extras: more fishing, platypus spotting, or seasonal raspberry picking.


3:30 pm – Salmon Ponds and Plenty Cider
Visit Australia’s oldest heritage trout hatchery and fishing museum, feed the giant trout and enjoy a Plenty Cider across the road.


5:30 pm – Return to Hobart
